Pyramid Lake is one of the most unusual fisheries in the country and it has been on my list for years. A 112,000-acre alkaline desert lake in Nevada with no inlet and no outlet, holding Lahontan cutthroat trout that routinely push 20 to 30 pounds. The tribal waters, the permit requirement, the limited season, the barbless fly-only rules — all of it makes this feel like something you have to earn. The cutthroat here were once thought extinct and came back. That's a story worth a trip.

Pyramid Lake Fishing Report

October Fishing

Monthly fishing report · October patterns and techniques

Pyramid Lake in October offers cooling water conditions that shift fish behavior as the month progresses. Anglers are finding that cutthroat trout become more active during this period, responding to the changing water temperatures. The bite is strongest during midday hours this month, with fish holding at varying depths depending on food availability and light conditions.

Cutthroat trout are the primary species anglers are targeting in October at Pyramid Lake. Fish are holding in both shallow and deeper water columns, with success coming from anglers who adjust their depth based on where insects and baitfish are concentrated. The increased activity in October makes this an excellent time for anglers pursuing these native trout as they feed aggressively before winter conditions develop.

Anglers are finding success in October using traditional Pyramid Lake techniques including small spinners, tube jigs, and live baitfish presentations. Cutthroat respond well to both trolling and shore-based casting approaches this month. The effective bite persists throughout daylight hours, allowing anglers flexibility in when they fish. Those matching their lure colors and sizes to the forage present in the lake continue to see the best results.

Pyramid Lake Fishing Strategies by Species

Seasonal patterns and techniques by target species · Verified against official sources

Lahontan cutthroat trout are the primary and most celebrated target at Pyramid Lake, Nevada, a 112,000-acre terminal desert lake on Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe sovereign water. The lake holds one of the most remarkable trophy trout fisheries in the United States, with fish regularly reaching 20 pounds and occasional specimens exceeding 30 pounds. Fishing requires a tribal permit — not a Nevada state license — and is open October 1 through June 30 only. Artificial lures with barbless hooks are required; bait is prohibited. The cui-ui sucker, found nowhere else on Earth, is federally endangered and must not be targeted or harassed.

Pyramid Lake Lahontan Cutthroat Trout Fishing Report

Lahontan cutthroat trout at Pyramid Lake are among the largest cutthroat trout in the world. The original Pyramid Lake strain was considered extinct by the mid-20th century after Derby Dam (1905) blocked spawning migrations on the Truckee River. The strain survived in genetic isolation in Utah's Pilot Peak range and was identified through genetic testing in the 1990s. Reintroduction by the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has produced a self-sustaining population where fish exceeding 20 pounds are caught regularly. Daily limit: two fish measuring 17 to 20 inches, OR one fish over 24 inches plus one smaller fish. Barbless artificial lures only. Season October 1 through June 30. Verify current regulations and purchase a tribal fishing permit at pyramidlake.us before fishing. The all-time world record cutthroat trout of any subspecies was caught here at 41 pounds in the early 1900s. Shore fishing from wading positions and float tubes along the tufa rock shelves is the primary technique. The lake is structure-light by conventional standards. Depth transitions and the thermocline drive fish location. Anglers work the shallow tufa shelves near shore where trout concentrate to feed. Peak season runs October through March during the coolest months. Spring fishing before the June 30 closure is also productive. The lake is closed July through September per tribal regulation.

Pyramid Lake Sacramento Perch Fishing Report

Sacramento perch are the secondary sport fish at Pyramid Lake and are open year-round under tribal regulations with a daily limit of 10. The species is native to California's Sacramento-San Joaquin drainage and was introduced to Pyramid Lake, where the alkaline water chemistry favors their tolerance over many competing species. Small jigs, spinners, and live or cut bait work well for Sacramento perch along the shallower margins and rocky structure near the tufa formations. They are not the primary reason most anglers make the drive to Pyramid Lake, but they provide additional action outside the October through June trout season and are worth targeting from shore access points. Verify current tribal regulations at pyramidlake.us before fishing.

Line tip

For fishing heavy cover after Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, I run 50-65lb braid. Zero stretch means you feel every bite and you can pull fish out of structure before they wrap you. Reaction Tackle is where I restock. Their low-vis green disappears in most water conditions.

Background

About Pyramid Lake

Pyramid Lake is unlike any other fishing destination I've researched. A 112,000-acre remnant of ancient Lake Lahontan sitting in the Nevada desert, alkaline and terminal with no outlet, holding Lahontan cutthroat trout that routinely exceed 20 pounds. The restoration story alone makes it worth the trip: the original strain was assumed extinct for decades, survived in a remote Utah mountain lake in genetic isolation, was rediscovered through DNA testing in the 1990s, and was reintroduced by the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe. Fish began exceeding 20 pounds within a few years. This is one of the few fisheries where you can credibly target a trophy trout over 25 pounds from shore.

Tribal permits required. Pyramid Lake is sovereign water of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe. Nevada state fishing licenses are not valid here. Anglers must purchase a Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe fishing and/or boating permit before fishing. Permits are available at pyramidlake.us/permits and at the tribal office in Nixon, Nevada. The season runs October 1 through June 30. No fishing is permitted July 1 through September 30.

Regulations (verify at pyramidlake.us). Artificial lures with barbless hooks only. No bait of any kind. Daily limit: two Lahontan cutthroat trout measuring 17 to 20 inches, OR one fish over 24 inches plus one fish under 24 inches. Sacramento perch: 10-fish daily limit, open year-round. The cui-ui sucker is federally endangered and endemic to Pyramid Lake. It must not be targeted or removed under any circumstances.

Lake size and location. Pyramid Lake covers approximately 112,000 surface acres in Washoe County, Nevada, approximately 35 miles northeast of Reno via NV-445. The lake reaches a maximum depth of 356 feet. It is a natural terminal lake — no dam, no outlet — fed by the Truckee River at the lake's southern end. The lake's high alkalinity and salinity reflect its terminal character: water evaporates but does not drain.

How to fish it. Shore fishing from wading positions is the primary technique. Long fly rods (9 to 10 foot, 7 to 9 weight) with full-sinking or sink-tip lines and large streamer or leech patterns fished along the tufa rock shelves produce the most consistent results. Float tubes extend reach beyond wading depth. The lake has minimal conventional structure. Anglers target the depth transitions off the tufa shelves where trout cruise and feed. October through March produces the largest fish and most active feeding.
