Largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and bluegill are the core fisheries at Clear Lake, California's largest natural freshwater lake and one of the most celebrated bass fisheries in North America. Clear Lake's warm, shallow, nutrient-rich waters grow largemouth bass quickly, and the lake has produced numerous tournament victories and trophy fish on the professional circuit. The lake fishes best in spring and fall for bass, with shallow tule edge and dock patterns dominating year-round. Crappie and catfish are excellent secondary targets. Verify current CDFW regulations before fishing.
Clear Lake Largemouth Bass Fishing Report
Largemouth bass fishing at Clear Lake is world-class by any measure. The lake's shallow, warm, nutrient-rich waters produce fast-growing fish that reach trophy sizes, and professional bass tournaments on Clear Lake regularly produce winning weights that rival any tournament lake in the country. The bass population is robust and the lake has excellent natural reproduction supported by abundant tule reed habitat, dock structure, and warm water temperatures that extend the feeding season. Spring is the most electric bass season at Clear Lake. Pre-spawn bass move from the deeper tule edges and dock structure into the protected shallow coves in February and March, staging in 4 to 8 feet before moving onto the beds in 1 to 3 feet. The shallow warm bays around Lakeport, Nice, and Clearlake Oaks are prime spawning areas. Spinnerbaits worked along the tule edges and soft plastics sight-fished on beds produce exceptional spring action. The lake's bass spawn early for its latitude due to the warm, shallow water, often peaking in March. Summer bass at Clear Lake hold in the tule edges, boat dock shade, and main lake points during the day, with the best topwater action in the dim-light hours of early morning and evening. Punching heavy jigs through the tule mat pockets produces fish during midday heat. A topwater frog worked along the tule edge at first light consistently produces the most exciting strikes of the season. Fall is another prime window as bass spread across the lake and feed aggressively on threadfin shad before winter. CDFW regulation: 12-inch minimum length for largemouth bass in Lake County. Verify current regulations at wildlife.ca.gov.
Clear Lake Crappie Fishing Report
Crappie fishing at Clear Lake is excellent and often overlooked by anglers focused on the famous bass fishery. The lake supports strong populations of both black and white crappie, with fish concentrated around the dock structure, tule edges, and submerged brush throughout the lake's 43,785 acres. Spring is the premier crappie season as fish move into the shallower dock and tule areas to spawn in 3 to 8 feet of water. The dock communities around Lakeport, Clearlake, and Nice are the best year-round crappie producers on the lake. Small tube jigs and crappie jig-minnow combinations worked vertically around dock pilings at 4 to 10 feet produce consistent fish. The pilings in the 6 to 10-foot depth range typically hold the most fish, particularly in the morning when fish are actively feeding in the shadow zones of the docks. Summer crappie at Clear Lake suspend under the dock structure in the 8 to 15-foot range during the hottest months and are most accessible by fishing vertically with a long pole or casting small jigs into the dock structure from a distance. Fall crappie return to the shallower dock edges as water temperatures cool and threadfin shad concentrate near the dock and tule structure. CDFW regulation: no minimum size, 25-fish daily bag limit for crappie. Verify at wildlife.ca.gov.
Clear Lake Catfish Fishing Report
Channel catfish are abundant throughout Clear Lake and provide excellent fishing from the bank and by boat throughout the warm-water months. The lake's nutrient-rich, warm waters support large catfish populations, and fish in the 3 to 8-pound range are common catches. The shallow to mid-depth cove transitions, the tule edges, and the main lake channel drops between the lake's basins are the most productive catfish areas. Night fishing for catfish at Clear Lake is consistently productive from May through September. Cut anchovies, chicken liver, and prepared catfish baits fished on the bottom in 6 to 15 feet produce consistent results. The warm water at Clear Lake keeps catfish actively feeding through more of the year than higher-elevation California reservoirs. Bank fishermen along the Lakeport waterfront and the multiple public access points around the lake find reliable catfish action on summer evenings. The channels connecting the various arms of Clear Lake concentrate catfish during transitional periods. Spring catfish fishing picks up in March and April as fish move from their winter holding areas toward the spawning areas in the protected coves. CDFW regulation: no minimum size, no daily bag limit for catfish in Lake County. Verify at wildlife.ca.gov.
Clear Lake Bluegill Fishing Report
Bluegill are extremely abundant throughout Clear Lake and provide excellent light-tackle sport on any given day of the year. The warm, fertile water grows bluegill quickly and the lake holds a large population of sunfish concentrated in the tule edges, dock structure, and cove areas throughout the lake. Spring spawning activity from May through July concentrates large bluegill in the shallow sandy and gravel areas within the tule margins. Small spinners, crickets, redworms, and small jigs worked near the dock structure and along the tule edges produce consistent bluegill throughout the warm-water months. The shallow gravel and sandy areas of the protected coves around Lakeport and in the Buckingham area are known spawning aggregation spots in late May and June. Bluegill on beds can be taken on virtually any small presentation, and kids and beginning anglers find excellent success at Clear Lake's public access points. Bluegill at Clear Lake make excellent live bait for larger catfish and bass. Large redear sunfish are also present and provide some of the most satisfying light-tackle sport on the lake. CDFW regulation: no minimum size, no daily bag limit for bluegill and other sunfish. Verify at wildlife.ca.gov.
Before you head out, check your line. If it's been sitting on the reel all winter or has seen a lot of rocks and timber, it's worth replacing before a serious trip. I order most of my braid from Reaction Tackle and have been happy with it.

One thing I always check before a big trip is my main line. For most of the presentations that work here, you want braid. The sensitivity makes a real difference, especially when fish are finicky. I've been ordering from Reaction Tackle for a while now and haven't looked back.
About Clear Lake
Lake size and natural origin. Clear Lake is California's largest natural freshwater lake entirely within the state, covering approximately 43,785 acres in Lake County in the Coast Ranges of northern California. Unlike the vast majority of major California reservoirs, Clear Lake was not created by a dam: it is a natural lake with geological origins dating back over 2.5 million years, making it one of the oldest lakes in North America. The lake reaches a maximum depth of approximately 60 feet and averages much shallower, giving it a warm, fertile character that grows fish quickly. The nearest city is Lakeport, the Lake County seat, on the western shore.
Water quality and fertility. Clear Lake's shallow, warm, nutrient-rich waters support extraordinary biological productivity that drives the outstanding bass fishery. The lake has experienced algal bloom issues related to phosphorus loading and other water quality challenges, but the fishery remains robust and highly productive. Water visibility varies considerably by season and weather, ranging from quite clear in winter to green and turbid in summer algal bloom conditions. The tule reed habitat along much of the shoreline provides critical cover and spawning habitat for bass and sunfish.
Regulations (verify at CDFW). Largemouth bass: 12-inch minimum in Lake County, no daily bag limit during regular season. Crappie: no minimum size, 25/day. Catfish: no minimum size, no bag limit. Bluegill and other sunfish: no minimum size, no bag limit. Always verify current regulations at wildlife.ca.gov before fishing, as CDFW may update size limits and seasonal restrictions.
Access points. Clear Lake State Park on the southeastern shore provides boat ramp access, camping, and bank fishing. The Lakeport City Beach area on the western shore provides public access. Multiple private marinas and launch facilities operate around the lake. The city of Clearlake on the southeast shore and the communities of Nice and Lucerne on the north shore also have launch facilities.
Bass tournament history. Clear Lake has hosted Bassmaster Elite Series and other major professional bass tournaments, often producing some of the highest winning weights on the professional circuit. Local guides and professional anglers have repeatedly cited Clear Lake as one of the top largemouth bass fisheries in North America, particularly for big-fish potential and sheer numbers of catchable fish.
